Sustainable Travel & Tourism

What do we mean by  sustainable travel and tourism?

Sustainability has become  something of a catchall  term and buzz word to describe many different things. So what does sustainability mean to us here at Swords Travel?

We base  our understanding of sustainability around 3 core pillars that have evolved out of the sustainable development model  of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation;

“Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities”

Destinations

Maintaining essential ecological processes and helping to conserve natural heritage and biodiversity

Culture

Respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities, conserve their built and living cultural heritage and traditional values, and contribute to inter-cultural understanding and tolerance

Our Clients

Maintaining a high level of tourist satisfaction and ensure a meaningful experience, raising their awareness about sustainability issues and promoting sustainable tourism practices amongst them

These 3 core pillars are the heart of our business and must be safeguarded to ensure not just our success, but the continued success of the entire travel industry, now and into the future. We need to take care that a move towards a more sustainable travel future does not become a box ticking exercise that has little or no impact on the destinations and the people that we all rely on to provide the beautiful holidays we provide.

To ensure this we need to have a Sustainability Policy that is achievable, measurable and long term.

The area where we in the travel industry can have the most effect is in the fight against global warming. The tourism sector accounts for 8% of global CO2e emissions, nearly half of which is created by transport, in particular the flights we take to reach the beautiful destinations on offer all around the world. We will provide our clients with a carbon account of the transport element of their holiday (flights, transfers, trains etc) and verified ways of offsetting the carbon cost  of this part of their holiday. We will also continue to work closely with our suppliers to ensure that the accommodation and overall holiday experience provided is as carbon neutral as possible.

The flights our clients take are a major contributor to CO2e emissions.

Carbon offsetting is a simple and effective way of ensuring our clients have the option of travelling more sustainably.
